Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:8
“Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead,
the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel.”
Remember He is the Offspring of David: Who He Is
Remember Jesus risen; in part 1 we remembered Jesus Christ and what he has done. Then we need to remember “Who He Is!”
“Remember Jesus Christ…. the offspring of David.”
In the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew (Matt 1:1), the lineage of Jesus is traced to David. Jesus is called the Son of David a number of times (Matt 9:27; 12:23; 21:9). This King David lived a millennium before the coming of Christ and is remembered for his victory over the giant Goliath, his rise to rule, and his fall in sin with Bathsheba. We may remember these but do we remember His son – Jesus Christ. For all his human frailties David is called “a man after God’s own heart “(Acts 13:22) and “the sweet Psalmist of Israel” (2 Sam 23:1).
Jesus is the offspring of David in his lineage, and is “the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David.” in his future ruling power (Matt 2:6; Revelation 5:5).
Humanity and Royalty are the marks of King David, and when we remember Jesus we remember His Humanity and in His Royalty – Who He is.
When I remember Jesus as the offspring of David, I remember:
A. God’s Promise to David: God is True to His Promises.
The lineage of David is filled with generations of men and women who were filled with human frailty. David’s kingdom divided, diminished, and was dispersed, yet in the fullness of time God kept His Covenant promise to David (2 Sam 7:12-16). Jesus came, son of David, his line preserved legally through Joseph and by birth through Mary. Jesus was born in the house of David, Bethlehem, of the tribe of David, Judah. ‘Remember Jesus offspring of David’ and I remember God always fulfils His Promises, His Word, outworks His will, in His perfect way and timing, and he will do the same for you and me.
B. David’s Path to the Throne - Suffering then Glory
Remember Jesus, his path to glory was through suffering and the cross.
David’s path was suffering them glory – and Jesus as His greater son followed that same path. David spent close to 10 years of his early life to age 30, fleeing the death threats of King Saul. David knew suffering. Timothy is to remember that suffering was part of the normal Christian life for those who follow Jesus. Remember Jesus suffered.
This was always a conundrum to the Jews that if Jesus was “The Messiah, The Christ” why would he suffer. Peter writes that the prophets of Scripture struggled over this as they “predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glory that would follow.” (1 Peter 1:11)
We are to Remember Jesus and steps of his humanity included suffering: “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you leaving us an example to follow in His steps.” (1 Pet 2:21)
Remember Jesus – “No Cross; No Crown” - suffering then glory!
C. David His Servant Example
David, “servant of the Lord” (Ps 18:1); “his servant David (Lk 1:69); “O Lord I am your servant” (Ps 116:6). Jesus was the son of a servant of the LORD.
Jesus said to His disciples, “Be a servant!”
“I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done. Truly, truly I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master.” (John 13:15,16)
"Remember the word I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours.” (John 15:20)
Remember Jesus – remember you are a son of a servant!
Timothy needed to Remember Jesus – Who He Is - to keep in mind the One who is the Son of David, and this same one is the source and supplier of all our needs.
We need to “Remember Jesus” – in His humanity suffering at the hands of men, yet he is victorious Royalty, risen, glorified enthroned for “God has highly exalted Him above every other name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and things under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil 2:8-11).
